THE 11+ EXAM IN BEXLEY

Information about the 11+ exam in Bexley.

When are the Bexley 11+ tests taken and what tests do children take?

The tests will be taken in the early part of your child's last year in primary school. This is for entry to a grammar school in the following school year.

Bexley Local Authority manage the 11plus and inform parents about the dates and content. However, it is important that you keep on top of these details and do not miss important dates.

Out of borough residents can also take the 11plus exam but important dates may differ from those dates related to borough residents.

The Test Papers

The Bexley is based on high standards of verbal ability, a strong command of English and mathematics and non-verbal reasoning. There have, traditionally, been two test papers, with a mixture of questions on each paper. Verbal ability tests your child’s vocabulary, their comprehension and their skills in verbal reasoning.

Numerical reasoning tests the child’s aptitude to solve mathematical problems. Non-verbal reasoning can be improved with practice and this section tests their ability to see how objects and shapes relate to each other and then to make logical deductions.

The maths questions should l not go beyond what children are expected to have been taught by the end of Year 5.

Each test paper contains approximately 50 minutes and includes some time for instructions and examples.

Each test has been divided into units, children will be given an allocation of time to complete each section, before being asked to move on to the next section. Test papers are generally in multiple-choice format, with the exception of some Maths questions where the answer must be calculated by the child. In multiple-choice questions the answers are marked on a separate sheet.

In the past the 11plus exam invigilator has played an audio soundtrack to talk children through the test papers and tell them how much time to spend on each section. Children can do all working out on the test booklet and rough paper has not be supplied.
